Hemifacial microsomia : symptoms, causes , treatments

 HEMIFACIAL MICROSOMIA 

Hemifacial microsomia , one side of your face doesn't develop as it should . it can affect your child's breathing , eating and hearing . surgery can address many of these issues . it takes time and multiple procedure to minimize functioning and cosmetic results .



Hemifacial microsomia is a condition that's present at birth . it occurs when part of one side of face doesn't  develop as it should . sometimes it occurs on the both sides of your face. 

Hemifacial microsomia can affect your :

  • cheekbones
  • eyes
  • facial nerves 
  • muscles
  • neck 
Hemifacial microsomia involves other body systems , bones and soft tissues , like your heart , kidneys , ribs and spine . 

SYMPTOMS OF HEMIFACIAL MICROSOMIA




EARS

abnormal ear positioning 
hearing loss
missing ear canal 
skin tags 
small or missing outer ear 

EYES 

inability to fully close one eye
missing eye
noncancerous growths 
small eye
 vision problems 

FACE 

flattened forehead or cheeks 
paralysis due to nerve issues 
small facial muscles 

MOUTH

cleft lip or palate 
difficulty speaking , swallowing or eating 
narrow jaw 
small mouth opening or tongue
uneven smile due to muscle and nerve issues 
 wide mouth 

TEETH

abnormally shaped teeth 
delays in tooth development 
extra or missing teeth
upper and lower teeth that don't align 


CAUSES OF HEMIFACIAL MICROSOMIA



The condition develop in the fetus at 4 weeks gestational age, when some form of vascular problem such as blood clotting leads to insufficient blood supply to the face . this can be caused by physical trauma , though there is some evidence of it being hereditary. currently there are no definitive reasons for the development of the condition . 

TREATMENT OF HEMIFACIAL MICROSOMIA 



Depending upon the treatment required , it is sometimes most appropriate to wait until later in life for a surgical remedy . the childhood growth of the face may highlight or increase the symptoms . when there is a severe disfiguration of the jaw , it is common to use a rib graft to help correct the shape . the treatments is based on the type of severity for these patients . according to the patient has moderate to severe symptoms , the surgery is preferred . if patient has mild symptoms , then a functional appliances is generally used .
