 WHAT IS DRY SKIN ?

Dry skin is skin  that  doesn't have  enough moisture in it to  keep it feeling soft. The medical term for dryskin  is xeroderma . Xerosis is severely  dry skin.  Dry skin feels like rough patches of your skin that can flake or look scaly . Skin is dry , it may or may  not be  itchy . 



WHAT ARE THE TYPES OF DRY SKINS ? 

Types of dry skin include :


1. CONTACT DERMATITIS - Contact dermatitis occurs when  something comes into contact with your skin that causes an irritant or allergic rection. skin may b e dry , itchy and red , and you may also have a skin rash . Some  examples  include jewelry metals , cosmetics , detergents or medications . 

2. ECZEMA - eczema is a group of skin conditions that cause red , dry , bumpy and itchy patches of skin . severe forms can cause cracking of your skin , which  makes you more prone to infection . 

3. SEBORRHEIC DERMATITIS -  Dry skin on your scalp can be the  results of a condition known as dandruff  in adults or cradle cap in infants . Seborrheic dermatitis  can also  cause dry,  flaky skin patches  on your face, chest and inside creases of your arms , legs  or groin . This type of dermatitis occurs when your body reacts to a normal yeast that grows on your skin . 

4. ATHLETE'S FOOT - Athlete 's foot can mimic dry skin  on your feet, but a fugus  causes it . When this fungus grows on your body, it called " ringworm" People who have  athlete 's foot may have dry flaky  skin on the soles of their feet . 

WHAT ARE THE CAUSES OF DRY SKIN ?

Many differnt thingscan cause dry skin, including environmental causes and certain health conditions . 
Environment  causes of dry skin include :
- Using harsh deodorants or cleaning products 
- taking long, hot showers or baths 
- living in cold , dry conditions 
- Using heat sources , such as central heating  or wood - burning stoves , that dry out the air .




DEHYDRATION :
The body uses water to perform many of its essential processes and functions . People use more water than they take in , they can become dehydrated . This affect the whole body and can cause dry skin . A person can prevent becoming  dehydrated  by drinking enough water every day . 

ECZEMA :
Eczema describe a group of skin  condition that cause itchy, inflamed, dry skin. These conditions include atopic dermatitis , contact dermatitis , dyshidrotic eczema , nummular eczema , seborrheic dermatitis , and stasis dermatitis . 

DIABETES : 
When a person has diabetes  , their body cannot properly regulate the amount of sugar in the blood . Their blood sugar levels might be too high or too low . High blood sugar level can cause dry , itchy skin . 

KIDNEY DISEASE : 
The kidneys perform many functions . one of them is to remove waste and excess fluid from the body . The kidney do not work properly , the body may not be able to maintainnthe right balance of minerals , nutrients , and water in the blood . People  with kidney disease tend to urinate more than usual . 

ANOREXIA :
People living with the eating disorder anorexia restrict their food intake . this can lead to malnutrition , which turns may causes dry skin . 
 
HIV :
People living with HIV are more likely to have dry skin than those who do not have the virus . This might be due to a number of reasons . 
 
  - the way the virus affects the immune system 
  - the person not eating enough 
  - a medication side effect 

WHAT ARE THE SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF DRY SKIN ?



Dry skin is often temporary or seasonal - might get it only in winter , for example - or you might need to treart it long  term .  Signs and symptoms of dry skin might vary based on your age, health status , skin tone , living environment and sun exposure .  they include :

- a feeling of skin tightness
- skin that feels  and looks rough 
- itchiness { pruritus }
- slight to severe scaling or peeling 
- cracked " dry riverbed " look to leg 
- Fine lines or cracks 
- skin that ranges from reddish on white skin to grayish on brown and black skin 
- Deep cracks that my bleed 

HOW TO TREAT YOUR DRY SKIN ?



Many cases of dry skin resolve with drinking plenty of water and using moisturizer regularly . The AAD  recommend using  a cream  or ointment throughout the day to releve dry skin. Cream and ointments  tand to be more effective than lotions. When an underlying health condition , such as diabetes or anorexia , causes dry skin , doctors will work with the person to get the condition under control . When dry skin is a side effect of a medication , it will usually go awy when the person  stops taking the drug . 

PREVENTION  OF DRY SKIN :

These are numerous things people can do to avoid  developing   dry skin . These include :
- washing in warm , not hot , water 
- staying in the bath or shower for no more than 10 minutes. 
- using only gentle , fragrances free cleaning products 
- patting , not rubbing , the skin dry  after washing 
- applying plenty of moisturizer immediately after drying the skin 
-  avoiding sitting or standing close to heat sources , such as fireplaces 
- drinking plenty of water
