The infection is contagoius and may spread to other  areas of the body, or other people, those living in the same  residence may develop carbuncles at the same time . in the early 21 st century , infection involving methicillin resistant has become more common .

WHAT ARE THE SIGNS & SYMPTOMS OF CARBUNCLE ?

Carbuncle is a cluster of several boils , which is typically filled with purulent exudate . Fluid may drain freely from the carbuncle , or intervention involving an incision and drainage procedure may be needed . Carbuncles  may develop anywhere , but they are most  common on the back and the nape of the neck .

A carbuncle is palpable and can range in size to be as small as a pea or as large as a golf ball . The surrounding area is indurated. Later, skin on the center  of the carbuncle  softens and peripheral satellite vesicles appear , these rupture , discharging pus, and give rise to cribriform appearance .  There may be localized erythema or skin irritation , and the area  may  occur, such as fatigue , fever , chills and general malaise as the body fights the infection .

CAUSES OF CARBUNCLE :

The initial cause of a carbuncle can often not be determined .  Trigger that makes carbuncle  infections more likely include recent incidence of folliculitis , frictions  or shaving  having hair pulled out from clothing such as sites or furniture grab at hair generally poor hygiene , poor nutrition , or weakened immunity. Poor health may be a  predisposing  factor - for example , persons with diabetesand immune system disease are more likely to develop infections  of the leg oe foot .

HOW TO TREAT CARBUNCLES ?

The cardinal rule is to avoid squeezing or irritating a carbuncle, which increases the risk of complications and severe scarring.

Warm compresses may promote the drainage and healing of carbuncles. Gently soak the carbuncle in warm water, or apply a clean, warm, moist washcloth for 20 minutes several times per day. Similar strategies include covering the carbuncle with a clean, dry cloth and gently applying a heating pad or hot water bottle for 20 minutes several times per day. After each use, washcloths or cloths should be washed in hot water and dried at a high temperature.
