WHAT IS DISCOID ECZEMA ?

 DISCOID ECZEMA : 

 Discoid eczema or discoid dermatitis , is a chronic condition involving inflammation of the skin. It produces a rash that  looks like discolored coin-shaped disks . it is extremely itchy and uncomfortable .  Discoid eczema  plaques affect different body parts ,  but they mostly  occur on the lower legs , hands  and  forearms . 

Discoid eczema  is a chronic condition that is long term or recurrent . it is not contagious , meaning that it cannot pass from one person to another . Discoid eczema is  a common type of eczema /   dermatitis  defined  by scattered , well defined  , coin shaped and coin sized plaques of eczema . Discoid  eczema  is also called nummular dermatitis . 


WHAT ARE THE TREATMENTS OF DISCOID ECZEMA ? 

As discoid  eczema is associated with loss of skin barrier function, it is important  to :

PROTECT THE SKIN FROM INJURY :

This type of dermatatitis often start  after minor skin injuries , so acreful skin protection is required . The hands are affected  use gloves and tools to make sure the skin is not irritated  by  friction , detergents , solvents , other chemicals , or excessive water . 

APPLY EMOLLIENTS FREQUENTLY :

Emollients include bath oils, soaps substitutes and moisturishing creams . they can be applied to dermatitis as frequently as require to relieve itching , scaling , and dryness. it may be necessary  to try  several  different  products  to find  one  that suits .  

AVOID ALLERGENS :

If patch testing has identified contact allergy , exposure  to the allergens  should be avoided . 

Discoid  eczema is usually a long  - term problem, but medicines are available to help relieve  the symptoms  and keep the condition under control .
Treatment include :
- emollients  moisturisers applied  to the skin to stop  it becoming dry 
- topical corticosteroids - ointment  and creams  containing  a steroid that  are   applied   to the skin and may relieve severe symptoms . 
- antihistamines - medicines  that can reduce itching 

There are also thing that can do yourself to help , such as avoiding all the irritating chemicals  in soaps , detergents , bubble  baths and shower gels. 
Additional  medicine  can be prescribed if your eczema  is infected or particularly severe. 
Occasionaly , areas of skin affected  by discoid  eczema  can be left  permently  discolored after  the condition has cleared up .

  • flaky rash of any shape , not always round 
  • very itchy , can be painful and dry 
  • folds of skin on the neck 
  • inside surface of the arm 
  • behind the knees

  • wrists 
  • when round , the color is the same  throughout the circle 
  • scratching can  lead to infections and crusting 
  • itch can get worse at night 
  • possible asthma and hayfever 

RINGWORM 

  • Small , circular rash  that can be flaky 
  • very itchy 
  • can happen anywhere , including the scalp 
  • darker in color on the outer part of the circle, lighter in the center 
  • can lead to swelling of surrounding nodes 
  • hair loss when on the scalp 

WHAT ARE THE CAUSES OF DISCOID ECZEMA ?

The cause of discoid  eczema is unknown  , although it may happen as a result  of having particularly dry skin . When  your skin is very dry it cannot provide  an effective barrier against substances taht come into contact with it . This could allow a previously harmless substances  such as soap , to irritate  your skin . 

The chemicals in cosemtics and toiletries that may  have come into contact  with your skin .  Contact dermatitis a type of  eczema caused by coming into contact  with a particular irritant , may have  a role in discoid eczema . some people with discoid eczema also have a history  of atopic eczema , which often happens in people who are prone to asthma and hey fever . Unlike atopic eczema  , dicoid eczema  does not seem to run in families .
